A strange parable-film that mixes two apparently total different stories with a common issue – the importance of the family in forming one’s life. The absence of family and communication can have opposite manifestations like this, but in both cases unacceptable ones. While one of the characters reaches extreme violence and even up to murder, the other succeeds in tolerating the degrading humilities in order to have a home.

In 1989, during
the Romanian Revolution, four men are digging a hole in the yard of an embassy
of a small country in order to fix a tube of gas. They are not affected by the
events of the Revolution and so they can look at it in a very detached, simple,
even naive way. All this is going on in a single day and the characters are as
astonished by the events.

A film made after a well-known folk fairy-tale found by Petre Ispirescu, a sort of Romanian version of Shakespeare’s “King Lear”. An emperor asked his daughters to express their love for him. The elder daughters compared their love with sugar and honey, while the youngest said that she loves her father like the salt in fare. The emperor felt offended, so he chased away and disinherited her. After being mistreated by his flattering daughters the emperor had to be saved by his youngest daughter who proved that her love was expressed in true words.

“Occident” gathers and intersects several stories about
immigration and especially about those who remain back home. The three main
characters of the film influence each other’s life even without themselves
knowing it. Almost everyone seems to want to leave Romania where life does not
have too much to offer. Luci and his fiancée Sorina have just become homeless.
Sorina’s father would have found something but he has been dead for years.
Sorina and Luci go to his grave, waiting for a sign from heaven. In this
cemetery, the free different stories come together. A bride cries on a bench, a
couple of policemen rush down an alley, a red car runs slowly behind the
graves. Sorina and Luci observe all these in tension. However, when the sign comes,
it is far from mystical: a bottle falls from the sky, straight on Luci’s head.
Fortunately, a kind Frenchman gives them a lift. For Sorina, this Jerome is her
only chance to improve her situation and she moves with him straight away. In
an attempt to win back Sorina, Luci takes a job as a living beer bottle. In
this way he meets Mihaela, who was jilted at the altar and now works as a
walking telephone commercial.
The second and third part of the film will retell the
same seven days in the life of the protagonists changing the point of view and
allowing us to acquire unexpected meanings.
